I Wonder As I Wander
Be warned ye who open this book,
and into its pages ye shall look,
for if the warning gave not heeded,
all joy from ye shall have receded,
listen all ye who read,
and my warnings ye shall heed,
then of blessings bound from me,
swell into everlasting sea,
heed these warnings,
ye be warned,
or ye self,
shall be scorned
I Wonder As I Wander
Little Rebecca sat by the smoking coals in the bucket. Her mother, old and bent, was scooping more coals into a pit. A little dog was walking about on the floor. The floor was of dirt and so were the walls and roof. They were actually underground. They'd been there for years. You see, Rebecca possessed unparalleled beauty that many people envied. Her mother feared that the world would try to get her. Rebecca had been told these words by her mother," Inside you is beauty and inside your beauty is magic." "Inside my magic is unparalleled power and inside my unparalleled power is victory. If victory got into the hands of the evil ones, The Red Power Of Witches, then the world would be exterminated of any good thing. So we stay here and hide," Rebecca would finish. "Yes," Mother said "That is right." That was the truth, so red, curly haired Rebecca stayed underground. Mother often went up to the market and sold her coals and bought food. It was quite a boring life, but Rebecca found it was still life. Every night Mother would sit down in her rocker by an imaginary fire and tell Rebecca about The Red Power Of Witches. She would tell her stories.
It was on a very special day that Mother pulled out her old, rough, gray hood and another smaller one. It was newer and brown. "I have a feeling that today you should come with me today to the market," Mother told Rebecca. Rebecca slipped on her hood and cape and tied it around her neck. They walked to town through the woods with their basket of coals. Mother set up shop as usual and they both kept their hoods up. Rebecca enjoyed handing out sample coals throughout the street. She met several little girls her age along with several elders. Finally, she stumbled upon the elderliest woman she had ever imagined. She was bent over more than her mother was and had long gray hair that hung down below her shoulders. She took the mini coal in her free hand and looked into it. She began to walk towards Rebecca and mutter. "Rebecca," she said "It's you! I have waited 200 years since I left The Red Power Of Witches to see you! It is true then, the prophesy! I can see that you have hidden it! You are as beautiful! Take this! Take the ring! I have been waiting for 200 years to do this. Take it and heed my warning: Leave the city as soon as you meet back with your mother. Take the charm. The charm will keep you safe from the city for a little while. As soon as you meet your mother leave, the city will then be destroyed. The charm will take you through a journey. Then your beauty will be real. But, after you leave me I will leave and be gone forever. Now go, I feel the witches' presence!" Rebecca fled holding the little medallion in her hand. She ran to her mother, who was sold out and had several orders placed. She had over quadrupled sales, little did she know it was that way because soon she would have no market to sell at. "Mother! Mother!" she exclaimed "We have to leave! An old hag told me! It's going to be destroyed! The city!" Her mother had begun to stuff her money into the baskets. "Let's go!" her mother said. As they fled, Rebecca looked back and saw the old hag fade into thin air. Then the walls of the building collapsed and the stone brick road fell in. The fountains spewed and exploded. The produce spilled everywhere and was gone. Everything settled in and looked as if it had been there for 1000's of years. The very presence of life exploded into bits of vapor floating through the sky. It was dark and lonely and Rebecca pressed the large ring to her chest. She squeezed her mother's hand and they began to run. The hood flew back from her head and blew in the breeze. Dark clouds filled the sky and the bits of vapor clung to each other. They all floated away like a ghost. Like a ghost of an old hag floating away.
Chapter 2
I Wonder As I Wander
Mother sat beside young Rebecca as she drifted through the early phases of sleep. Then a soft voice came from the old, bent woman that seemed to hang in the air, "As I wonder as I wander,
Under the sky,
The sea and its waves,
Drifting on by,
The stars that I know.
Swim through the sky,
As I wooooonder,
As I waaaaander,
And the softness,
Of the sky,
Guide me onward,
'Til I diiiiiiie,
To my place near,
Theee skyyyyyy,
As I wooonder,
As I waaaander."
The sweet melody filled the air as the ancient song rolled off her tongue. The words seemed to grab the air and swing by each particle in a dance of grace and love. The words of the ancient hymn danced through the air and seemed to vaporize in their dance. Rebecca drifted off as the melody sank into her skin and very being. The sweet voice had sung to her every night. Then a chorus of heavenly voices sang the last, most ancient part of the old hymn, " And the stars sing,
O'er my life,
Let the oceans,
Bring out their strife,
Let the birds sing,
In perfect harmooony,
As my thoughts swirl,
As I wonder as I wander,
Iiin the deep niiiiiiiiight." Mother faded off to sleep in the swaying of the voices. The two slept to their hearts content until the morning came. The ideas of such a thing as the hag had explained swirled in their minds and they wondered. Their little dog was pacing back and forth and howled. Rain poured down outside, seemingly completing the happenings of the day before. Hail scattered on the ground above them and lightning danced across the sky, thunder clapping merrily for its performance. Trees blew in the wind and the rivers rushed around wildly. The trees and plants themselves seemed to be afraid. Mother woke up Rebecca and told her,
"Do you feel that wind?"
"What wind, Mother? We are inside, underground even! Are you going crazy on me?"
"No! I am not going crazy, dear. The Red Power of Witches is after us! Get up and put on your cloak, I will pack up our belongings while you get us some food. Hurry!"
Rebecca got up and put on her cloak and began to pack her food. She watched as Mother put the dog into a basket and covered it with a red blanket and tucked it all around the dog. She wondered if her Mother was right, or if this was all a trap.
